Kate Powell is a theatre-maker, facilitator and puppet practitioner whose work focuses on the education and liberation of creativity within communities. From her rural beginnings winning awards at festivals with her local dramatics groups, to using Drama as a tool for education in orphanages and schools in India, Kate is interested in all aspects of theatre and its potential.
Kate qualified with a 1st Class BA Honours degree in Drama, Applied Theatre and Education at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, where she gained experience working within schools, outreach projects and in her final year a placement conducting workshops, rehearsing and producing a show on Restorative Justice within HMP Doncaster.
Kate is always looking at new and innovative ways to use theatre as a tool and had the opportunity to work with some puppeteers during her time training which ignited her passion for all things puppets! She began to explore the use of puppetry as an educative and communicative medium applying it to her projects and practice, leading to her being the puppet practitioner she is today.
Kate has worked with the educations department at The Little Angel Theatre (Home of British Puppetry) delivering workshops in schools and is often a Duty Manager for their professional development programmes. She has also created an interactive performance within the Freud Museum, toured a show promoting healthy eating with NYSA, travelled to Udaipur in India to meet world-renowned traditional marionette artists, delivered workshops to Youth Groups across the country and continues to be a director, creator, designer and manipulator of puppets for several independent projects.
